Me playing Mushihimesama Futari on Black Label God Mode.

Even if you are just remotely interested in shoot-'em-ups, import this region-free game for your X-Box 360 today and convince Cave that their shmups are definitely welcomed outside of Japan!

I never had a problem with them not being region free. Then again, I never owned a PS3 or 360 since I don't really game much outside of shmups and puzzle games. This new batch of CAVE shmups pretty much pushed me over the edge to finally invest in a next-gen (now current gen, LOL) console. I'm happy that MS is going out of their way to court diversity on their console. We get some great shooters and CAVE gets a bit more exposure in the west. Also, Ketsui and Akai Kitana, baby!

  • @Broyale26

It's a shame then that MS have paid so much for these games to NOT make an appearance on the region free PS3 :(

  • @Noobsaibot21

What it comes down to is this...making a game region free isn't as simple as a programmer flicking a switch. Microsoft has a process of certification that the developer has to pay for if their title is to be considered region free. And its neither a cheap or easy process at all, check out Mihara's blog for proof of this. Its cheaper and more efficient to sell the rights cut rate to several publishers and have them do the legwork in their respective regions. Strange how that works.

  • @Noobsaibot21

They actually stand to make LESS by making the game region free. You're asking a developer to invest money in a market that might not be as strong vs. holding out to sell a title to another publisher who might be a better judge of the actual demand for that title.

An(bad) analogy-spending $10,000 to fly overseas to sell something and only recouping a few hundred to a couple thousand vs. someone PAYING YOU $2000 to sell it in their country while you stay at home and make $10,000

  • I doubt the game actually being localized and released in the western markets is that viable but, in reality, there is no reason they shouldn't be made region free but only marketed in Japan. The sadly limited number of fans outside Japan will go out of their way to stay informed about, and purchase, these games anyway.

That way, Cave get their regular Japan sales and plenty of import sales without having to market in the US and Europe. Everybody wins. Except for idiots who ignore this genre.

  • So if you are holding back on the X-Box Live Ikaruga - get it, you won't regret it! ^_^

  • I sure hope more people would take notice of the current development of shmups.

I just want to point out that the 360 Ikaruga is not "butchered". The only thing missing from it is the menu screen with Shinra walking in the haze as you're selecting mode of play. I own both the 360 and the Dreamcast versions - Treasure intentionally changed some things for the 360 but other than that, it's worth the repurchase. I like not having to rotate my display to get full resolution of the graphics too.

  • First of all, I'm watching these videos since I love Cave games, am getting this, and respect your taste in games due to your playing this one.

I've found that though shmups are a hard sell outside of Japan in general, people who have never seen manics before are intrigued when they do; many people don't know that shoot-em-ups today are very different. Plus I heard the Live Ikaruga was butchered...

As for 1.01, I hope it's possible to get it now; I want to see what Ultra 1.01 is about...

  • Shmups are a bit of a hard sell outside of Japan so they are being cautious. Even a masterpiece like Ikaruga is mostly ignored on X-Box Live - a majority of my Live friends don't care about it at all. MushiFutari's sales number is supposed to influence their future efforts to get their games accessible worldwide so I hope there's already enough support being shown with MushiFutari that we don't have to worry about future Cave games anymore ^_^

  • I shall keep my eyes peeled for any update from your quarters!

Which leads me to make the following remark about marketing games like these: If I were Cave, I would strategically choose to market region free games. In this way, I would accomplish my goal of increasing my company's revenue steam while still satisfying their avid fans around the world!
