Funnel clouds and brief tornado seen near Epping (Melbourne) on Christmas Day (25/12/11). A day of massive Supercell storms across the metro area. A tornado was sighted on the ground near Fiskville/Keilor which damaged houses and cars approximately 20 minutes earlier. This funnel formed approximately 20 minutes later from the same cell. There was a brief cloud of debris (not visible due to the plants in the foreground), but was only short liver (5 seconds or so).

Large hail up to tennis ball size was also associated, and rainfall of 50mm in 20mins.

Several other tornadoes were also reported. The radar images showed a pronouned hook echo at the same time this footage was shot. There are actually two funnels visible in the footage

  • .if you look from 28seconds on. to the left it looks like something is touching down. imho i think you were filming the wrong part of the storm.

  • @Brisky26 what you're seeing to the left is precipitation. The rain curtain/core was to the left/behind the camera. The wall cloud feature in the centre was visibly rotating, with areas of very low rotating scud and funnels forming over and over.

  • So amazing-- Couldn't you film longer :(

  • @CwAziEGiRl camera battery died at the most damn inconvenient moment!!!!! By the time I got a new one in, it has dissipated. Storm was moving quite fast too. Had trouble keeping up with the selection of road directions I could take.

  • thats in Killore yer we were eating and we saw that i shat myself

  • @2011GamerBoy It's in Epping

  • @GREENVK Oh that is not fair!! Darn camera battery! :( Fair enough-- roads would be hard to find that are a safe distance away!

  • it looks like gods hand :O and on christmas too

  • @Brisky26 Na mate VK was filming in the perfect spot....you were looking at the warcloud which from a distance looks like its touching the ground.but in actual fact is the calling card in a supercell like this for tornadic activity u can clearly see the 2 tornado's form in VK's film..tornado on the left classic wedge tornado...and the right 1 was a rope tornado both looked like they had massive potential

  • omfg! i live in epping, holy chit!!!!
