The Role of Local History in Tibet Today - Panel at WEAI, Nov 22 2011
On November 22, 2011, the Modern Tibetan Studies Program at Columbia University held a panel discussion on "The Past in the Present: What is the Role of Local History in Events in Tibet Today?" designed to look constructively at some unresolved events from early 20th century Tibetan history. Three historians - Jianglin Li, Tom Grunfeld, and Benno Weiner - and the exile lama, Kirti Rinpoche each gave a presentation on their research finding or experience and addressed questions from the audience. The panel was moderated by Professor Robert Barnett.
Based in India since 1959, Kirti Rinpoche is the spiritual head of Kirti Monastery in Ngaba (Aba), Sichuan, site of recent unrest. Jianglin Li is an independent researcher on Tibetan history in the 1950s and author of 1959 Lasa! (Lhasa 1959!). Professor Tom Grunfeld is a historian of U.S. policy on Tibet and a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at Empire State College in New York. Benno Weiner is a Ph.D candidate at Columbia University researching the history of Tibetan areas of Qinghai in the 1950s.
The sentance on the banner which Rinpoche said has translated wrong!
the correct translation is Barrel of the gun listens to me and I listen to (tang) which means Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
