Easter Day 2011 at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine, NYC, played on the fully restored Great Aeolian Skinner Organ Op. 150AB (as restored by Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc., 2008). This clip shows off the State Trumpet stop immediately after the Bishop Of New York opened the 18 foot high Great Bronze Doors at the West End of the Cathedral, followed by the traditional Easter Hymn Lyra Davidica.

The Cathedral's Organ Scholar Raymond Nagem performs at the console.

For those wondering about the capture device, I used my 4+ year old Canon S5 digital camera set to the highest video resolution. This Canon has very good audio mics, considering it is SD video! I was positioned in the Great Choir, top row, and the Canon was angled so no one could see its recording light blinking....

  • I am familiar with to two organs in who Quimby voices. He always makes the reeds really harsh. The flues are nice though.

  • @jeabo0adhd Not sure what you mean. This organ's reed voices are not at all harsh, and Doug Hunt would have made sure the existing AS reed voicing wasn't changed by Quimby. Have you heard this organ in person?

  • Great, but....the person's "singing" almost ruins it.

  • @gkissel1 Have you ever tried a live recording during a church service? It is kind of hard to tell people not to sing...

  • Wow! Nothing quite like the great state trumpet to shout "hosanna"! I love this organ and hope to be able to hear it in person someday.

  • @misterzu Yes, in my opinion this pairing doesn't exist anywhere else in the world - the combination of acoustic and organ are unmatched - adding in a newly restored instrument and highly skilled performers is an unbelievable experience! You need to make the trip!

  • This organ and cathedral draw the worshipper into the awesomeness of God Almighty. Now if those parishioners would hush up & pay attention. I got a good pinch if I ever talked in church!

  • that is HOW you do "Jesus Christ is risen today".

  • @gramps2matt There is NOTHING more variable than a processional entry... (don't know why this is) but the best way to compensate is to have a fantastic organist who can literally "improvise" on the given hymn. That is actually what seems to be happening here. Basically, they planned for him to "make it up" which is why he keeps looking down at whoever ISN'T conducting (and why no one is singing). At 5:21, he notices the isle clearing and cadences, the cue for the conductor to conduct again.

  • Magnificent! Would love to know who wrote the fanfare and arrangement of this hymn!

  • IMPRESSIVE!!!

  • I was there for that. :D

  • OK gotta admit I watched the video in this video that being the CCTV monitor to the right of the organist showing the conductor directing and the organist watching for his cues. Best part near the 3:30 mark as the conductor starts to get swamped by folks in the procession getting to his area in the church. Once order is restored he conducts again.

  • love to see the organist swing and sway as he plays... a true artist enjoying his craft... love to see that!

  • Love the arrangement and Brass accompanied. Would like to know who arranged it.

  • @Chesterbarnes1 No, Gerre was organist and cantor at St. Thomas (a few blocks away though).

  • @livzdave ....sigh.....some people just think french organtrumpets are the way to go and I'm not one of them.....
