Here's a quick first look at the character creation system in Knights of the Chalice. The game only has three playable races and classes (including more would be a bit much to ask of the single programmer who worked on this game), but they make for some interesting combinations and a wide variety of spells and feats provide additional depth and customization options.
For those of us who are a bit rusty when it comes to basic D&D rules and terminology, a very comprehensive in-game help system provides a wealth of information and can be easily accessed by simply right-clicking on whatever it is that you want to know more about.

Glad people still make games like this. Just got it, having a blast. Tons of tricky battles that will drive you nuts but are still incredibly fun.

I do not get this game it is sooo hard. Took me hours just to get past the orc attack in the castle.... You should make a "getting started" video showing the beginning of the game

I agree on the Ultima 6 comparison. As for the licensing issue, the developer has been using something called the Open Game License (OGL), which Wizards of the Coast has apparently developed themselves to allow some forms of D&D products to be released by other companies and individuals. There's some more info about this on the developer's site.
