actually, Mariah Carey has very good technique when she's not belting. she belts because she sings pop (I wouldn't do this, but that's how you sing that style). PS: I study speech level singing and it's working great for me. my throat is not squeezed at all and my entire range is easy and natural. maybe you just had a bad teacher. PPS: much of the basis of SLS comes from the old bel canto school. it's just applicable to opera and modern styles of singing
Mariah Carey learnt classical technique from her mother, her mother was an opera singer.
SLS does squeeze the vocal cords together a lot because they don't emphasize on support too much and they teach you to resonate the sound in your throat, the sound should be resonating mostly in your head area but you should use your whole body for resonating, this frees the throat. Try to lift up your cheeks when you sing higher and see how less pressure it is on the throat, try it.
my teacher heavily emphasizes support from low breath and she would NEVER let me resonate my sound in the throat. she was an opera singer herself for more than 30 years. she always makes sure that my sound is natural and unstrained all the way up and down the scale (which she takes me quite far). after every lesson, my voice feels great. your accusations of SLS are absurd.
Well your teacher obviously had some sort of classical training in the past if she was an opera singer. That is why she emphasizes on breath support and avoiding resonating in the throat. I never said your teacher was bad or her technique but the SLS technique is not complete, it lacks a few things.
She is probably teaching you the good things about SLS and adding a bit of classical technique in there, that should be fine.
SLS is good but its not complete, it lacks a lot of things.
Trust me I have studied it in the past for about 2 years and got nowhere. Right now I am studying with a classical teacher and I have learnt how to open up my voice better with no squeeze in the throat.
