June 26 2011 Las Conchas Fire near Los Alamos

Time-lapse movie of the Las Conchas Fire, Los Alamos County, June 26 2011. Time-lapse exposures are from a vantage point just north of Santa Fe, home of Polly White & Michael Zeiler. Los Alamos city and labs can be seen to the right of the fire.

I've been contacted by a fire scientist and learned that this video is a rare photographic record of a phenomena called "horizontal roll vortex" fire. This type of fire was first identified in 1956 and is not well understood.

A "horizontal roll vertex" fire as seen in this video has a clear rotation of the fire column and is associated with extreme crown fires. This fire is certainly extreme, having grown to 43,000 acres on its first day.

A better understanding of the conditions which led to this fire will hopefully enhance forecasts and warnings of severe fire danger. I'm sending the photographs which comprise this time-lapse video to fire scientists for their analysis.

@splurtikiss It's discouraging how my video has brought out the crazies. Yes, the fire is a serious event and there is real concern about the fire impact, including the radio-nuclide issue.

Weather is a complex phenomenon. There is NO diabolical "weather modification technology", except for general warming of our planet from accumulating CO2. If we take carbon emissions seriously and ignore conspiracy junk, we'll be better off.

A pattern I see is conspiracy nuts can't write proper sentences.

@MartinHDJ Ya I'm afraid @MichaelZeiler is right. Big wildfires can "create their own weather", like lightning and giant cumulus clouds, but obviously not rain because they have burned up all of the precip. meow! chemtrails are real, but try not to be be a chemtard ;)
