VIDEO TAKEN ON DEC. 13TH, 2008. DATE IN VIDEO IS INCORRECT.

During the month of December, the Wilmington & Western runs thier annual Santa Trains through the Red Clay Valley. Santa climbs aboard the train, as he continues his journey by rail; he really gets around, doesn't he? Remember, he knows if you've been naughty or nice, and if you've been naughty, then Santa may come up to the engine and get some more coal! So sit back, enjoy the ride, and be good for goodness sake.

  • Awesome, that's what I call a Christmas present. I think the IC steamboat is a little out of place on 98, though....it sounds good, but it's a little "big" for an American.

  • From what I was told, #98 wore a whistle like that when she was down south. Those deeper whistles were common in the Southern states.

  • wow sounds like a friggin blast goin at 5 mph....my gosh could they baby their equipment any more

  • They go slow on these trips so Santa can see all the kids.

  • @CSX6000 Not only that. They need to fix the track and they don't have the money, So they go slow not to damage the track. plus the trains are over 100 now. They don't want to take any risks.

  • PLS can anyone tell me where can i ride steam engine near Rochester NY?

  • I don't know why but that whistle makes me think it should go on strasburg's 475

  • Wow that is a nice video. The W&W do have some nice equipment and for some reason the railroad reminds me of Strasburg.

  • Wow, from my count, that was 13 scoops. No wonder the safties are lifting at the beginning!

  • My thoughts exactly! Wouldn't it be nice if someone restored a Big Boy? Sure UP's challenger is nice, but it is not the Big Boy!

  • Incorrect.

B&O museum has the WIlliam Mason, there are numerous 3' 4-4-0's in regular service aswell.

  • Actually you are right. I just looked at the whistle and never knew it was a Hancock. I thought a Hancock was one type of whistle. I didn't know Hancock was a maker of whistles. Sorry 'bout that. Fact is, it sounds beautiful.

  • Actually it is a Hancock, it has the Hancock Inspirator Company insignia on the base. Also, the base itself is a signature Hancock design namely the handle, fulcrum and valve. This is a much older design before the advent of the "archless" bell. The LV may have used them profusely on their passenger locomotives, however it is still a Hancock design.

  • Well don't forget, the equipment is 100 years old and we want to preserve it. There is no use beating it because it sounds nice working hard. Also, we don't have the facilities to maintain our equipment like Steamtown or Strasburg. Our goal is to make the equipment last for many years to come so young kids in the future can enjoy it like we do now.
