Townsville RSL Stadium has had its moniker officially bestowed today.

A crane lowered the lettering into place today, marking the final days of construction of the $14.6 million stadium and a brand new era in Townsville sport.

Mayor Cr Les Tyrell and Townsville RSL president Rod McLeod were on site this morning to see the signage erected.

Cr Tyrell said the project's contractor TCS Pty Ltd was expected to handover the stadium to the Townsville City Council in the next fortnight.

"The wait is almost over and it's really only testing system and some finishing touches before the complex will be handed over by the contractors," Cr Tyrell said.

"It's looking great and I'm extremely pleased that it will carry the name of the Townsville RSL which provides enormous support for the local community."

Mr McLeod said the Townsville RSL was delighted to be a part of the future of sporting events in Townsville.

"This is a significant investment in our community which is only made possible through the generosity of our members," Mr McLeod said.

"The sponsorship of the Townsville RSL Stadium is part of our ongoing commitment to encourage the health and wellbeing of locals within our community."

Preparations are already well under way for the facility's first big month of events in July to publicly launch the 2200 seat stadium.

Activities will start with the official opening, followed by the Council's annual Sports Awards on July 20 and the Townsville Fire hosting an basketball international double header when China plays the NQ Allstars and the Australian Opals on July 27 and 28.

The Townsville RSL Stadium project was managed by the council and funded jointly with the Queensland Government ($8.2 million) and the Commonwealth Government ($3.05 million).

The star tenant of the new complex will be the Townsville Fire, alongside other groups including Townsville's state netball team the Steelcats, futsal, volleyball, badminton and Sporting Wheelies.

Seating is fully motorised and recessed and will be complemented by up to 320 loose floor level seats plus boxes at capacity.

The stadium will include three indoor air-conditioned multi-use playing courts, community rooms, a gymnasium, public amenities and disability access, change rooms, reception area, administration space, kitchen, and café and stores, and a first-floor mezzanine.
