The rocking thumb roll (alternating thumb, or square roll) is a great roll to sing with, do backup, and perform some banjo leads. (the right hand is going Thumb, Index, Thumb, Middle (TITM)). I strongly suggest this as the 1st roll to learn. Frankly, if you only learn this roll, you're a banjo player!

  • Thank you. I am inspired with playing roll patterns and chords to accompany many, many songs. I tend to focus mostly on solos when I play the banjo. However, learning and practicing solos can be time consuming. Also learning to play a solo requires patience.

Therefore, this video gives me the incentives to play the roll patterns and singing the melodies.
