This is the third solar heater I have been working on for a while. It's made from a sliding glass door. I'm working on this for the winter months to keep the house warm. I'm currently working on the stand to hold this beast up in the back yard. I'm hoping with all 3 units my home will stay warm during the day without the help of the hvac unit during the winter.

  • Should I rinse the old beer out of the cans first? LOL j/k. :D I have looked at a lot of these videos, and yours is the first that has a window unit. I think thats a GREAT idea! I plan to make a couple of these. :) Thanks for posting!

  • @Stormclouds777 right on! hehe yep i would rinse them lol... i have a new idea I'm going to try on my next one building the inlet and outlet in a sorta upside down fish hook or ( L shape ) that the window lowers on to.. that way you just lift the window and remove the hole thing in the summer.

  • would it get more heat if you used flat black paint on the cans?

  • @Sensoka i have heard yes but i did a window test on can painted both flat and color and the temp was the same, So i just use the paint i had.

  • What did you seal the can together with?

  • @JammerUSN84 i used liquid nail

  • Good job, I started one in Florida but didnt finish. Would like to build another now that I live in Virginia. Real cooooollldd. So you play drums? I want to sing in a band. Need some cool dudes to jam with.

  • OK DUDE where's the finished product? It's been five months, and you said the vinyl siding would be finished in a couple of weeks.....you're late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Looks really nice - Made mine out of sliding glass door windows as well. Just wondering if on the ends you would have been better off to have a thin piece of black sheet metal below the glass so that you don't lose any heat because of the air going against the cold glass surface. Just a thought - not sure what difference it would make??

  • pretty nice solar heater. have you got any temp readings on any yet? I built a second one for this winter, and so far it is working excellent with my heater from last year. Deffinately tell a difference using two.
