"The nation's corn crop is fertilized with millions of pounds of nitrogen-based fertilizer. And when that nitrogen runs off fields in the Corn Belt states,it makes its way to the Mississippi River and then into the Gulf, where it contributes to a growing "Dead Zone"- a 7,900-square-mile patch of ocean so depleted of oxygen that fish, crabs and shrimp suffocate."-The AP
speaking from a farmers point of view here, we (about 75% of all farmers) incorporate our nitrogen fertilizer into the ground and thus greatly minimize the potential for run off issues. Anyone that is blaming the farmer for these problems should take the time to look at the run off from their own lawns and their oh so great golf courses that dump on hundreds of pounds per acre more than the local farmer does. Dont just blame the easiest target people!

All that nitrogen we're dumping into the ocean is leading to a big spike in N2O emissions.
