    Hey!

I attended your seminar in the Netherlands a few days ago ( one of the 3 guys of Invirtus, with the braid :p ). It was very enlightening and a lot a fun! I was especially impressed by your speed. So, I was wondering, do you have any more excercises on speed/explosivity you recommend?

    Thanks,

    Jem

Hello Jem, of course we do. But it's not possible to describe them here in 500 characters. But you can use sport fencing exercises for leg explosiveness. If you want to be fast with arms, just omit everything unnecessary. That's the best way how to by fast.

A piece of advice I like is to only tense when connecting, then relax for your "recovery". Use your energy with control, but fiercely, exactly when you intend to strike and then remove tension as soon as you connect or whiff it. Also try to ensure your step connects with the ground the same moment your blade connects with face. This way, you deliver a powerful strike, but if you bind, your relaxation following the attack will make fuhlen easier. Your initial power also prevents too weak a bind.

"Also try to ensure your step connects with the ground the same moment your blade connects with face." from our experience this is not the best way. A passing step cannot be done under 400ms but the simple cut can be done under 200ms. It would slow the cut down.

As a student of Karate I can appreciate the beauty of this style.

It has as much merit as any style using the Katana.

But neither is better than the other.

To say otherwise is shortsighted and childish.

thats so freakin intense. I dont fight with a mask because we use composite sticks, so we dont do lots of thrusting. i was always under the impression longswords were used like claymores, but now that i see this it doesnt seem to be the case. its a manly sport for sure

    ""Longsword ... Katana ... stronger/elegant/superior ... they said""

Here's an article from JC who wrote it after negative experiences in search for volunteers for a full-contact match between Japanese traditional schools and HEMA:

    -- ht_tp://w_ww.thearma.o_rg/essays/knight-vs-samurai-experiences.h_tml

Not a single one US-representative of a Japanese traditional Martial school was willing to "enter the arena" in a non-staged match, but they kept saying lots of things to keep their faces...

If you google *the hema alliance "group finder"* you will find a map over most of the clubs that teach this. As you live in the UK it's very likley that there is a club near you.

    Good luck with your training.

. with the sword, i am just a bloody novice. But cannot help to see the parallels.

I also see, that it would not make sense to reduce cutting speed just to match my slower leg/body movement.

But i propose to keep the delta between arm and leg progress as small as possible.

the "falling step" - in weaponless combat - if you connect arms while still connected to ground on only one foot, your balance is non-existant, and it takes only a minimum of effort to drop you to the ground.

If i had a sword, and you cut - and your falling step lags behind... can i not parry and same time sweep your floating leg?

In weaponless martial arts, "simultaneus" actions are ok - and even hand leads foot - but that never means the foot we want to rest our weight on.... big difference
