In 2008 Frito-Lay unveiled a 2.4-MW solar thermal plant to generate steam directly and power its industrial process heat. SunChips are now truer to their brand name because they're made using the sun. Generating electricity to heat water (or anything else for that matter) is an inherently wasteful process. By boiling water directly, companies save on the inefficiency of having to generate electricity to do it.
