New 2010 video for correct installation of Package Bees in blue corex boxes from Easy Bee.
Step1: Prep all your hives with minimum 3 frames of drawn comb.
Step2: Half fill your FRAME FEEDER with sugar syrup. Makes sure there is a float (stick sponge anything that they can sit on without drowning).
Step3: Use a NEW sprayer (meaning no paint, chemicals etc have been used in it) and put in a 50:50 mix of sugar syrup and water.
Step4: REMOVE 4 frames of foundation from the side nearest the frame feeder leaving a big enough gap to shake in your bees.
Step 5: Lightly tap your package bee box and open the lid giving them a good soak in sugar water from your sprayer, dont be shy. This fills their guts with sugar which makes them less aggressive and will be able to build up a nest and draw out comb far quicker.
Step6: Quickly pull out the bottle and queen cage placing your queen without the pink plastic hanger inbetween your drawn comb frames and then pour the remainder of the sugar syrup from the bottle into the frame feeder.
Step 7: Place the bottle with the lid on with the opening facing downwards so any bee's still remaining in the bottle can crawl out into the entrance.
Step 8: Open your package bee lid again and shake the 3lb of bee's into the space in which you removed your 4 frames and then give the queen, the frames and the bees another soak in sugar water. Again this will stop the bee's from drifting (especially if you are shaking in more than 5 packages) , it will improve the chances of acceptance rate with the queen and give them a quick source to draw the foundation out faster for the queen to get quickly laying.
Step9: Allow the bee's to settle then place the 4 frames carefully back in the hive.
Step10: Once bee's have settled push the frames up tight and carefully place on the lid.
Package bees use a large amount of syrup during their establishing of their colony so keep the frame feeder topped up with sugar syrup untill they have drawn out all 10 frames.
It is reccomended you do no poke around the nest for a furthur 10 days to allow the queen to begin laying, then should you check for acceptance of the queen and begin adding excluders, supers etc etc whatever you may please.
Good luck!
