BBC on Ethiopian famine 1984

Maybe one of the most important and influential pieces of news ever broadcasted. According to Buerk's autobiography it made the Australian pm weep in public and started a massive interantional aid operation (including the Live Aid concerts).

Even though many of us are tired of neverending African crisis on television there is something brutal about this seven minute footage. Even though it is of low quality no human being should be unaffected by seeing it.

I got the inspiration to find and put up this clip after reading Buerk's "The Road Taken". It is one of the few good autobiographies I've ever read...

I was involved in the distribution of funds on the ground after this appeal. Sadly, my bad experiences back then ended all my involvement with charities.

We had to pay off many army warlords to get food to the people. Often this was done with a cut of the food itself- but then we increasingly resorted to smuggling in the weapons they said they needed to “destroy enemies of the Ethiopia”.

I saw the massacres which resulted. Money donated in good faith probably killed more people than it saved.
