Mad World
Chapter 18

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I thought it was strange for him to be rushing somewhere that quickly, like he was trying to get away from something, I put it off. Nothing more than a strange incident. I was wrong…” I moved closer to him.
“That night, I called her several times but she didn’t answer. It was odd , based on the fact that she always answers her phone. Again , I put it off. The next day I.. I walked to school, she wasn’t there. Anywhere. I figured that she got sick and stayed home. But there was something inside telling me that something was amiss. About several hours later, my head was reeling, it felt like ice picks were stabbing my temples. I was worrying so much about Tracey that my head hurt. My dad picked me up. That’s when we saw everyone gathered around the bridge, the flashing lights shined brightly on my eyes. My dad pulled over and I got out of the car racing over to where everyone was. First I saw the body which felt like a punch in the stomach.. but when I looked closer it was Tracey… It felt like everything had been taken away from me. I didn’t even realize that I was on the ground shaking horribly before my dad came over. I didn’t eat for weeks, I felt sick. It was my fault I didn’t stop that guy.. That sick bastard. I knew who had done it, I didn’t even have a doubt in my mind that that Kiyo guy killed her.” He sat there without looking at me. “The look on his face after I’d hurt him, it was the look of a killer. You have to get away from him, Alex, do you here me? I’m not joking around here. Distance yourself away from him before he starts hurting your friends or your family. I knew Kiyo had hit me that day but I didn’t want to tell you. I had to let you know what really happened though that’s what I was going to talk to you about.”
“Frank, anyone could have done it..”
“Don’t sit here and tell me that you don’t think it’s him,” I was quiet. Nothing could ever convince me that Kiyo killed Tracey, not even Frank. “Alex, please, trust me.”
“It was nice talking to you, Frank. I’ll come back tomorrow.” Grabbing my bags I left. The feeling of having Frank tell me what everyone else had come to know was bothering me, but if I wanted to know the truth I was going to have to talk to Kiyo. Once I had gotten into my car I dialed Kiyo’s number in. One the first ring her picked up.
“Hey, Alex.”
“Hi…” How was I going to bring this about.
“So, what’s up? Is there something you wanted to tell me?”
“I visited Frank today at the hospital.”
“Really? What did you guys talk about?” His toned changed, it surprised me even then how it happened so suddenly. I went blank. For some reason it felt as if I were being lured into the conversation about Tracey, like Kiyo had known exactly what Frank and I were talking about. I revved the engine.
“Oh, you know, just checking when he can leave. I’m going back tomorrow-”
“Can I come?”
“Um…” Out the car window I looked up at the hospital, Frank wouldn’t like it so much if Kiyo came especially after what he told me. “I… I don’t think you should.”
“Why not?”
“It’s just, he’s really stressed out and he told me not to tell anyone else to come because it’s makes him feel useless. You know since he’s the football captain it would make him feel like he’s not good enough for the team.” Huge Lie. The only thing I was hoping for was would Kiyo believe it. It was silent on the other end of the line.
“Alright,…I’ll talk to you later.” He hung up before I could say goodbye. I closed the phone. Later I was going to ask him if he had some involvement with Tracey Brigg’s death. The chances were slim to none. It felt weird, picturing together what it could have looked like… No matter how much I tried to dislodge that picture from my mind, it wouldn’t go away.
That night I dreamt the same dream about Tracey. The one in the black hoodie still shrouded with mystery, it frustrated me that maybe Kiyo wasn’t what he said he was but who was I to believe. But that night… at the movies he almost killed a man with his bare fist, he was only trying to protect but how far can one go… I tossed and turned in the bed, my mind wouldn’t let me go to sleep without finding out the truth but it could wait until the morning.
The sliver of light growing brighter by every minute awakened me, I had fallen asleep not too long ago and I felt horrible. Slowly but surely. I made my way to my closet picking out clothing that would keep me warm against the cold chilling winds of this damned place. The harebrained thoughts still fresh from the sleepless night fogged my mind. One thing that was on the top of my list today was to find out exactly what happened that November day. Even if what comes out of it can either break me or keep me balanced, I want to find out the truth. Gathering all the strength I could possibly muster I walked up to Kiyo and tapped him on his shoulder.
He turned around and smiled, “Alex.”
