Today, astronaut Mike Fincke will spend his 378th day in space, breaking the record for longest time in space by a U.S. astronaut. The mark was previously held by fellow astronaut Peggy Whitson. When Endeavour returns June 1, Fincke will have spent more time in orbit than the shuttle Endeavour has logged in its entire 19-year career.
Fincke's current mission aboard Endeavour is his first on a U.S. shuttle — until now, he had only traveled on the Russian Soyuz. Fincke says his record will easily be surpassed some day. But the shuttle program is about to end, meaning American astronauts will have to rely on the Russians to get to space, at least for now. So it's likely Fincke's record will hold for longer than he thinks. —Video by Elizabeth Saab and Jon Tortora
