if you seen SGA in one of the final episodes(if not the final) Carter said to i believe it was Sheppard that Hammond died and they renamed the ship to him (that is in SGU btw check it out) that should have ringed some bells because there was no reason of saying that other then he really died and it was a tribute to him.
Shame he had to die relatively young :(
