Brits you keep getting your facts mixed up 1. a booster is not an engine 2. Discovery did not blow it was Columbia and Challenger that blew up 3. we have thee orbiters not 4 not 2 three and the fourth reason is Brits never seen a shuttle launched.
Thanks very much for that. That was a good overview - now let's get to the meat. Let's zero in on the details. It is just absolutely amazing that little rig produces that much horsepower. I've got to go to work, but will somebody please do the calculations and tell me what a 2012 Boss 302 Mustang will run the quarter in with that kind of a push?
This kind of sensationalist, gee-whizz 'documentary' is one of the reasons why I cancelled my Sky subscription after 6 years of watching, over and over the same sort of crap on the Discovery channel and the other so-called documentary channels. I once bought a book, "Rocket Men" by Craig Nelson which was reputed to be about the first men on the Moon. It contained so many egregious errors I gave up at page 116. I am sure Nelson wrote the script for this crappy SSME article - the style is familiar
@063209dr true however, the SSME is the most efficient liquid propellant engine in use (or was in use) with a specific impulse of about twice that of the F-1 engine [~450s vs ~260s]
In contrast to the commentary suggesting that the SSME was one of the most powerful engines, just one of the five F-1 engines of the saturn V first stage is more powerful than he combined power of ALL three of the Space Shuttle main engines.

what the hell ... how has letting the exhaust flow around a curve after it's left the engine anything to do with the engine not lifting up? ???
