View Jupiter and 4 moons (full screen) taken with the Canon SX40HS, no special setting or apparatus. Settings IS0 3200 Manual Focus TV at 1/400 (stills) Tripod, Max Digital Zoom 140x

  • First time I've seen other moons videotaped without a telescope. Very nicely done! Did you also make pictures?

    Thank you for the comment- I have taken a few stills, but the moons are not as clear as the video and I think I should be able to do better. Its quite difficult holding things at 140x. If I do get a shot I'll post a link here- Stephen

  • Thanks for this and sharing the settings - I have just got this camera and am really excited to see what it can do. All the best Stuart.

  • For still shots use a sturdy tripod & Manual mode. Set ISO to 400 or 800. Set the shutter speed between 0.6 and 0.3 seconds. Set the timer to 10 seconds. Set manual focus to infinity. Point it at Jupiter. Zoom to a full 35X optical zoom or toward a 140X digital zoom if you prefer. Keep Jupiter inside the center rectangle on the LCD to reduce distortion. Tighten the tripod head. (You will have to readjust every 2 or 3 shots.) Press the shutter release and don´t move. Best Wishes.
