THE HAUNTING (1963)

Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn and a host of ghosts and goblins bring Halloween to Tired Old Queen at the Movies, with Robert Wise's classic THE HAUNTING (1963). Shot in black and white and based on a novel by horror master Shirley Jackson, this is probably the scariest haunted house movie ever made. Filled with superb performances, an eerie score, fabulous sets and shot in an atmosphere of absolute conviction, this film will not only make you believe in ghosts, but will have you jumping out of your skin at a knock on the door. Whatever you do, wherever you are, whoever they are, don't let them in! Happy Halloween!

  • I love Julie Harris, but not scary movies. The scariest I have watched recently was "The Innocents" with my girl crush, Deborah Kerr. I still can't get "Miss Giddons dear" out of my head. Because of your review, I just may pick this up and watch it in the middle of the afternoon on a very sunny day. LOL!

  • I saw this movie on television when I was a child in the sixties and it scared me to death. This little critique has made me remember just how good it was and I plan on looking for a copy this weekend.

  • @AuntieVeraCharles50 I'm afraid that's from "The Legend Of Hell House", not "The Haunting". A lot of people get them mixed up, lol.

  • Definitely, TCM needs Steve!

Agreed, The Haunting will keep you choking on your Milk Duds and DOTS all the way through! Much better than the the color remake!

  • love the pic of Veronica Lake!

  • If Robert Osborne never returns at TCM, I nominate Steve Hayes to take his place!

  • Steve! I am stunned you are so well versed with Shirley Jackson......marvelous.....

  • That was FABULOUS!! "The Haunting" is sooooo scary!

  • Absolutely wonderful review,

  • This movie terrified me as a child seeing part of it on TV,I later rented it and it's an intense ghost story that plays with one's psyche.JulieHarriss is wonderful,as well as Claire Bloom. The house is enormous, and looks Evil.
