This is me trying a Century Egg, or Thousand Year old egg. They are only a few weeks or a few months old though, though they taste pretty ancient. They are made by treating the egg from a duck, chicken or whatever (in my case a duck) with a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime, and rice straw. The result is something with the consistency of a hard boiled egg but with an entirely different color and smell. On hindsight I don't think they tasted as bad as my first impression. I was mostly thrown off by the color.

If you are wondering why I am looking pretty scraggly, it was because I was on the tail end of a 2,000 mile bicycle journey. This was a stop at a friend's house in Los Angeles where I had fun checking out the local Asian markets.
