Kurokami means 'Black Hair', in olden times the symbol of a woman's beauty. The dance portrays the feelings of "Oiran", a courtesan of the highest rank, with the music "Jiuta" emphasizing mood and emotion over dramatic narrative. We have the pleasure to see one of the most beautiful and respected onnagata of the Kabuki Theater Bando Tamasaburo play the role of Kurokami. For better understanding of the dance Kurokami is narrated by Paul M. Griffith. For the original version of the dance without commentary please look for the DVD Sagi Musume Vol. 2.

I am interested in the DVD but it is not clear to me from the yesasia page which of the DVDs contain which play and whether they have english subtitles (oral and/or text) or not ? I need a region 2 (Europe) DVD but english subtitles. Can anyone help ?

Hello friend I went to the yesasia page and it appears the DVD Sagi Musume - Tamasaburo Bando Butoushuu (DVD) (Vol.2) (Japan Version) is available for Region 2, but it does not have english subtitles or language.

@Deidara188 Yes, but what do Onnagata play? Women. The only reason the narrator is saying 'she', is because the dance is about a woman that the Onnagata is playing. Think before you post. Though I do agree with you about Tamasaburo-sama. He is a national treasure to Japan.

Severing of the finger hinted at here was not about severing relations. Some would cut off a finger to prove their love FOR the man. It was a dedication, almost like ownership. She would ruin her life for him.... next step, if they could not run away was Shinju - a lovers' suicide pact. Tragic ugliness behind such elegant beauty.
