@JohnWelsch i don't yet know about that, have tried it out two days ago for the first time and without reading/watching any tutorials or such - just playing around for 10 minutes. but even then, i already noticed something that might be a major advantage over maya - the node-based system. it's basically what i've always wanted from maya's construction history - to be able to bypass or delete e.g. an extrusion node without fucking up the whole model.

@JohnWelsch well... it all depends, i guess. of course great technical aspects aren't everything but depending on what you're trying to create, they still might be vital - just take e.g. the visual effects of cheap tv movies...
and i think people still playing starcraft 1 is mainly south korea's fault ;) (also, i don't think art direction has anything to do with that but simply that fallout 3 doesn't even have multiplayer and once the story is finished, you're basically simply done...)

is houdini less troubled? I have never tried it, I think they have a test version I need to check it out.

@sh4dow83 yes, they are not perfect and probably will never be. You add win7 problems and there you go.
But my point in the first post was that it matters less how stuff looks than what is being shown. Look how much crappier warhammer online cinematics look (btw you can watch the making of somewhere online) than those 10y old from wc3. It is not the extra plug in that make hair more realistic that make a good final product. People still play StarCraft 1, yet everyone forgot Fallout 3 already.

@JohnWelsch well... you say that the tools that we have are "more than enough" because incredible things could be done even with max 2 already... but i would argue that the tools we have now still have a long way to go until artists have the comfort they need to be able to concentrate on just their creative work. and especially considering the price point of these packages, one would think that a lot more customers would criticize them instead of mostly talk about how great they are...
