The Karen are mountain people that lives in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
In Thailand it is with 350,000 people in 2000, the largest mountain tribe.
Right now a part of the Karen are Buddhist, part animist, but many Christian, amid a Buddhist society. They have a freedom army, the Karen National Union (Karen National Union, KNU). Many of these freedom fighters have fled to the jungles of Myanmar to Thailand. One of the strongholds of the rebels is called Maner Plaw. This large stronghold, where not only Karen lived, was betrayed and now there are over 200,000 of these refugees in refugee camps in Thailand.
