@safersephiroth50 I read somewhere that the translation got messed up because there's no "th" sound in japanese (for exapmple, sephiroth in japanese is セフィロス, or SE-FUi-RO-SU). But the name Aerith (or Aeris) was supposed to bear likeness to the word Earth. I think the kana for it is エアリス, in romaji, E-A-Ri-Su. But I guess really only the guys at Square know the real reason.

@NuvjitSidhho actually, セフィロス is SE FI RO SU. these two "フィ" are a FU フ and a little I イ, and all togheder are read "FI".

there are several combinations of this kind in katakana to make the word sound the most close to the originale language.

ディ～ティ (di/ti) ウィ～ウェ(wi/we)　ヴァヴィヴェヴォ(va/vi/ve/vo) and many others. lol.

@RoseMilord But excuse me, it was reused in Crisis Core (which is downright official), approving of Aerith as a true translation.
