Time Zones
2003 5'28''
video animation
audio: Time Zones, Negativland, Escape From Noise album/cd, Seeland Records, 1987
www.negativland.com
In 1994 I made a video for Negativland's "Crosley Bendix discusses the copyright act" (The letter U and the Numeral Two, 1992) This video was made without their notice.
This was the first video work I ever presented.
By October 2002, Alexandre Estrela (artist and friend living in New York) meets Mark Hosler from Negativland during a presentation of some of their videos at the Anthology Film Archives in New York, and tells him about my old video. Mark asks me to send the video.
A month later Negativland invites me to make a video from any audio work of my choice. I choose Time Zones.
Time Zones is about time and size, United States versus Soviet Union, the cold war, the use of media as a vehicle for psychological warfare and the use of computers to control the "imperfections" of men.

  • Great, great video! Super work!

Your Clock has the letters NVS. It should read NBS. NBS = National Bureau of Standards, now NIST. Easy to hear the B as a V in the audio.

  • Thanks! Well, it was discussed with Negativland during the making of the video in 2002, and according to their transcription it was NVS...

  • facts about russia sans the american deceptions...i grew up with nuclear clouds on commercials on television and of course the lies of ronald regan with his red hot poker and american / russian statistics and carte blanche for the military industrial complex which they got anyway...can't fight em, join em

  • bAcK AgAiN iN sPiTe Of YoU aLl...2 SaY that Bob Smiles Eternally Upon you from Multiple pleasure saucers he's rather busy with the triple breasted love goddesses at the moment and will GeT baCk 2 U at the earliest possible cOnVeNiEnCe --- Prophets of Bob

  • this is really incredible but i dont think you know why. my friend from the machine shop in tucson and my friends from frisco all loved negative land all the way from the beginning through the present and into the future whatever. u2 did a fairly decent job of banning them? and noone would give them mainstream attention but their style, Collage, is just as valid and wonderful as any other...they disturb you, they move you, and they even rock the house...legendary industrial, really

  • Never trust a woman from the former USSR.

  • @doubleyewgee This track is discussing the Soviet Union, but Russia even post cold war still had 11. However it is just 9 since March 2010.

  • WA6ODB....with...a question....

  • is that Ted Koppel's voice?

and how did he ever end up talking to such a geeb?
