This video is mostly a response to YouTuber "solartape," but may be useful for anyone else dealing with a computer that prompts you for a password as soon as you turn it on. Of course the intent is not to hack into somebody's password protected computer, but rather to make useable an old computer that is being locked by an unknown password. The basic idea is to take out the CMOS backup battery (or batteries) until the computer forgets its settings (including the password), then reinstall the battery and hopefully the computer will be useable once you reconfigure the BIOS settings, if necessary. This Toshiba laptop makes it tricky by using two backup batteries and hiding them underneath the keyboard.

Oh, and if you happen to be using a BIOS password like this on your computer, this shows you just how weak of a defense it really is. Many PC motherboards even have a jumper which can disable the password and clear all the BIOS settings in an instant, without even needing to remove the backup battery.

  • If i remove the batteries and let the settings reset, will i lose all pics and personal files on laptop?

  • @josh01078583 No. Taking out the batteries does not magically erase your hard drive.

  • Is this the 435CDS because I also have a problem with it, when i turn it n, the hard drive light cojmes on for 5 seconds and than turns off. It doesent show ny signs of life. HELP

  • @delliswierd Try removing the hard drive and RAM and see if it then stays on, as those components could be faulty. Otherwise I'm afraid the power supply could be dead, and unfortunately the one disadvantage of a built-in power supply is that it's much more difficult to replace if it goes bad, as compared to the external power "brick" that most other laptops use.

  • @iron93man loopback parallel cable ;) check on the web how to make the connection. Toshiba actually gives it as a part in case you forget your password

  • why don't you just make a loopback parallel cable to bypass the password screen and reset it??? the only thing you need is one end of a parallel cable!!!
