This is part one of four videos on International Mother Language Day 2009 observed in Washington DC. Organized by the Embassy of Bangladesh, Drishtipat DC and the World Bank's Youth2Youth Group, UN Association of the Capital Area
This video presents an evening of global music and colorful dance performances to commemorate UN International Mother Language Day 2009 in Washington DC. This was a humble effort to pay homage to martyrs who made supreme sacrifice on this day in 1952 in Bangladesh to help us preserve our mother tongue Bangla. This is also a tribute to those of our valiant sons and daughters , Language solders and freedom fighters.
This event was aimed at celebrating the world's 7,000 languages and the cultures they embody.
Today nearly half of the world's languages face the risk of extinction. This event aims to promote linguistic diversity, highlight the importance of protecting languages, and encourage multilingual education.
February 21 was deemed International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO General Conference in 1999 in recognition of the brave sons of Bangladesh who sacrificed their lives to protect Bangla language and culture on February 21, 1952. Bangladesh is the only country in the world whose independence movement had been ushered by its language movement.
This embassy has therefore been trying for last few years to turn this event to a truly international event. This year international presence was just outstanding making our Bangabandhu auditorium overflow. We came to realize that we are far bigger than what we think we are!
