Demonstration/teaching clip of finger articulation ("ornamentation") and phrasing in trad. Irish double jig "The Mooncoin". On Rudall & Rose C19th wooden flute. Posted as a contribution to this thread http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=59183 on Chiff & Fipple Flute Forum.

Incidentally, this video is rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise - I shot it with my phonecam turned on end before realising I had no software to rotate it. However, as it shows my hands at something like a view-from-behind playing angle, maybe it is more helpful this way? I certainly wasn't lying on my back to shoot it, though.

  • Nicely played but I prefer a stronger tone.

  • Thanks for your comment. I too prefer a stronger tone - getting it consistently is another matter! I'm not one of those who is naturally gifted with a superb strong, resonant ITM/C19th British School tone/embouchure and have to work at it - which I certainly don't do hard or often enough. I have my good moments! That said & FWIW, the video was done on my camera phone, so recorded sound quality is limited!

  • I recently bought a sam murray flute-fantastic tone off it!

  • I've been very impressed with the 2 or 3 Murray flutes I've had a chance to try - quite up to his reputation - lucky you! However, there is no issue with the tone potential of my original R&R - any deficiencies are mine! Remember good tone is more the player than the flute, assuming a reasonably decent instrument in good fettle.... Other, better players can make a bigger, fuller, richer sound on my R&R - and I do have my really good days too, now and then ;-) (not often enough :-()!

  • Jemtheflute: thanks to you I finally mastered The Mooncoin, a tune that managed to escape me for a long time. But playing along with your vid for about a 100 times finally did it. Thanks, Ger

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm very glad you found it helpful and enjoyed it. It's a grand tune. I'm always happy to put up more demo vids like this if there's anything I can help with. Happy tootling!

    Cheers,

    Jem.

  • Nice tune there at 1 min 38 secs, first time I've ever come across it. Played it very well. Thats a fine looking flute your playing, excellent raspy tone of it. Don't mind telling me who made it.

  • Very beautiful.
