Over 1 Million Bullets Fired At Jesus Christ, Paris Hilton & Warhol
From the artist who has shot guns at some of pop culture's biggest icons comes the highly anticipated & politically charged launch of ART OR WAR: Bullet Paintings by Viktor Mitic
Toronto, ON, August 25. 2010 -- From past world wars to today's G20 brutalities, we are constantly overwhelmed with violence and destruction. In an effort to create much needed dialogue, Viktor Mitic will shock and outrage the Canadian public using firearms and over 1 million bullets to create beauty.
On September 23, 2010, Mitic will launch his book ART OR WAR at one of Canada's most prestigious and longstanding galleries, Gallery Moos, along with his Bullet Paintings Series offering a visual commentary on guns and violence. Chronicling Viktor Mitic's controversial and at times mystic works, ART OR WAR is a powerful collection of Mitic's work and explores the question, "Do bullet-riddled paintings represent art or violence?"
"There is an uneasiness in people and their perception of weapons, since they are made for one purpose only - to kill. I use weapons to re-create iconic images," says Mitic. "I carefully shoot the outline of the subject that surprisingly generates a feeling of tranquility. Although the process is very loud, there is a sense of peace after the smoke is gone. I'm creating something that reflects beauty and that gives some perspective on our society."
With essays by Garry Michael Dault and an introduction by prominent writer Jim Nason, 11 of the paintings presented in the book are accompanied by some of the most thought provoking and insightful commentary by many distinguished Canadian authors the likes of: Barry Dempster, Erika Ritter, Catherine Bush, George Elliot Clarke, and others.
"[He's] taken an iconic religious image and used a gun on it... What next?" -- Mark Coles, BBC
"Everybody hates American Gothic. But only Viktor Mitic has had the presence of mind to empty a few rounds into it." -- Gary Michael Dault
Media are invited to preview the collection and book on September 23, 2010 from 4-5PM. The ART OR WAR: Bullet Paintings Series will be on display to the public from Sept. 23 through Oct. 22, 2010 at Moos Gallery, 622 Richmond St. W.
