The traditional sea shanty "A-Roving," sung by the Revels on their album "Blow, Ye Winds, In the Morning."

In Plymouthtown there lived a maid—
Mark well what I do say—
In Plymouthtown there lived a maid,

And she was mistress of her trade.

I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

A-roving, a-roving, since roving's been my roo-aye-inn,
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

I placed mine arm around her waist—
Mark well what I do say—
I placed mine arm around her waist,
She said, 'Young man, you're in great haste.'
I'll go no more a-roving with thee, fair maid.

A-roving, a-roving, since roving's been my roo-aye-inn,
I'll go no more a-roving with thee, fair maid.

I placed my hand upon her knee—
Mark well what I do say—
I placed my hand upon her knee,
She said, 'Young man, you're rather free.'
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

A-roving, a-roving, since roving's been my roo-aye-inn,
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

I kissed the girl and went away—
Mark well what I do say—
I kissed the girl and went away,
She said, 'Young man, why don't you stay?
'I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

A-roving, a-roving, since roving's been my roo-aye-inn,
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

I took her hand within mine own—
Mark well what I do say—
I took her hand within mine own,
And said 'I'm bound for my old home.'
I'll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid.

A-roving, a-roving, since roving's been my roo-aye-inn,
I'll go no more a-roving with thee, fair maid.

  • @alexisyourbuddy I think it should be played moderately fast - it IS a rollicking sea chantey, after all! :)

  • This version of the lyrics is far too tame. The better version has the fair maid stealing the sailor's wallet in the end.

  • @alexisyourbuddy I play flute too. It's supposed to be played pretty fast.

  • @alexisyourbuddy A little late BUT it is sung fast when used for keeping time when hauling braces, brales, or sheets, and slow when pushing capstain as when hauling a yard or weighing anchor.

  • moby dick

  • @alexisyourbuddy it can be sung in many different ways, it's a folk song

  • I see Revels every Christmas

  • @rachel1865 thank u very much! :) i cant wait to rub it in my friends faces :P and play it!
