Nat D. Ayer was a good ragtime pianist in addition to writing such hits as "Oh, You Beautiful Doll", and this (among others). He wrote at least one fully-scored instrumental rag, titled "Rig-A-Jig Rag" (which is a tough one to play), and even found time to make a few hand-played piano rolls, including one of "King Chanticleer".

First I would like to thank for this video. I have bought 2 books where I can found the partition (I'm not sure about my traduction I mean a book where I can read the music) but the version doesn't looks like Jim's one. I would like to know if there is other version about this song or not and if there is other what is the reference of the book that Jim exhibit at the beginning ! Thanks a lot !

Over 40 years back, Fort Lauderdale had some great live entertainment. A favorite night for my husband and me was to watch a piano player named Ragtime Bob Darch, He was just wonderful and you left the Escape Hotel with his music pulsing in your mind. As far as I know he never
recorded King Chanticleer,
How happy I am to discover KC on You Tube. You surely do it justice, Jim and now I am also a fan of yours. Handful of Keys is another favorite as is Fats Waller anything.
Thanks so much

Thanks Tom. It has always been a favorite rag era piece to have fun with. In the early years of the Maple Leaf Club in LA I wrote a chart on this tune for the Dawn of the Century Ragtime Orchestra. At that time the band featured Dick Zimmerman and myself on two pianos-we gave the horn players a run for their money!

Jim,
I'll bet that was lots of fun and some great music! I wish I could have heard it.

Yes, there were plenty of good times as myself,Zimmerman, Ian Whitcomb, Dave Bourne, Bill Mitchell and later Robbie Rhodes were blazing the trail in preservation. This was the 7 years before "The Sting". This was when the best known Joplin was Janis. These were the years when you would be invited to a party to meet and play with Eubie Blake,Shelton Brooks, Joe Jordan,Max Morath-where long lasting friendships were made have lasted to this day. It was a moment in time.

No problem, I never mind answering requests even at a distance. Good luck with Chanticleer, I'm sure you will do a great job with your own interpretation of this classic.
