This is a robot that is able to detect objects or cliffs using a laser beamed onto the floor and around its self.
A Hacked Wii-Camera picks up the action and relays the info to the robot...

you can make the pole shorter if you add a wide-angle lenses, google fish-eye lenses, they cover up to 180 degree so you can put them pretty close to the robot.
