  • mig it. its easier

  • sometimes it is, and sometimes gas is faster

  • @Mettleworks why hammer the welds?

  • @citydriver

metal expands when you heat it, up,down and sideways. when it tries to go sideways the strong cold metal around it prevents that, so it goes up and down.

When it cools, that small thicker part pulls on all the metal around it and causes it to warp/bend, just like a spring. It is moved but not past the elastic limit of the material. When you pound on the weld you squash the metal down and it flows out releasing the tension that made the metal next door bend. You get a relaxed panel.

  • Your flame is not too good. You want to clean the nozzle and maybe back off the oxygen a bit. What size nozzle you using and what's the pressure on the oxy bottle and the acetylene bottle? For this kind of light guage steel you don't need more than 4lbs on either guage absolute max. In fact if you have the right size nozzle you could bring both back to 2lbs each - its plenty. Cranking up the poundage pressure can be especially problematic in getting a good flame and also very dangerous.

  • correct, the torch provided by one of the students had some problems. It was difficult to make it work.
