US Cameo Parkway 1965. I always wondered why the UK Billie Davis and Judith Scott cover versions were always more popular on the Mod and Soul scenes than this corking original. Sheer brilliance.

  • This tune was played on a few Drake programmed stations in Spring 1968 but didn't last long. Great tune. Message was certainly controversial. Just like That Kind of a Woman by the great Merilee Rush

  • Evie Sands "Billy Sunshine" is classic version & others pale in comparsion-amazing lady deserves recognition from music industry for decades of peerless great musical moments...musical icon, incredible singer/songwriter is a legendary wonder..Bravo great lady, you rock!!!

  • Sadly enough, I never heard this wonderful Evie Sands version---obviously due to the troubles that the now legendary Cameo-Parkway Records was suffering at this time due to lack of promotion and distribution. This song was actually one of the highlights on the Merillee Rush debut lp for Bell Records, ironically titled after her smash single release, "Angel of The Morning/That Kind of Woman," with "Angel" also originally done by Evie. However, no covers could ever match Evie's musical intensity.

  • A real knock it out of the box song that should have become a hit. Only Drake stations played it. Shame

  • Thanks for this! Evie is great! Be sure to catch her 1999 CD Women in Prison! It is remarkable--her best ever, in my opinion......but all her records are terrific. :)

  • Wow this is very good! I still like Judi Scott's version better.

  • WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS!!! Why was this never big!!

  • Actually, I'm not surprised this is less favoured by the Norther Soul crowd. It's more garage rock than R&B/Soul, imo.

  • Yes a good one by Evie, Seems Evie Sands had a bit of bad luck with her recordings especially with take me for a little while.

  • Nice one !!
