This talk traces the history of modular concepts from their first articulation in the Depression-era building industry to their seemingly ubiquitous use in the 1990s. This history suggests that modularity, first embraced as a modern means for rationalizing the chaotic building industry, emerged as a powerful tool for managing the complexities of the postmodern information age.
