HP Pavilion dv9000 (DV9830US). I have 2 of these laptops and both have the issue.

HP's support has been of no help.

I'm glad to see others have found the fix since I've posted this video, and that many are able to resolve the issue (even if we don't have OSD afterward). After many calls, emails, and chat session with HP.. And the many packages they had me download and install, I ended up restoring to OEM (to remove the pointless packages) and deleting the application. The result is the same as the other comments. Volume control continues to work with no OSD, and there is no slow-down within applications.

Thank you all for your help, and I hope the comments continue to help others.

  • I got a better suggestion which is so much easier...just download the software update from hp's site and then it fixes the problem! :D

  • Not really a "better" suggestion, but another means of resolving the issue.

  • hey, if anyone is still having this problem...you just need to close the application HPKBDAPP.exe...and then delete the application from your Hard drive... c:\program files\ hewlett-packard\hp quicktouch\hpkbdapp.exe...

actually this application is not needed...and you can deleted it with out any worries.

  • I have the same exact issue on my laptop. Works fine when no applications are running but as soon as I open Firefox or Internet Explorer the problem occurs. I'd chalk this up to poor software design since it seems to be fairly widespread.

Anyway, I fixed it by disabling the OSD in msconfig (startup section).

There is not even an option in device manager for sound video game controls so i cant fix the problem

I cant install drivers and its a known problem windows service pack 2 does this so I dont know

  • this worked wonderfully. not only did it solve the problem, but the popup was really annoying anyways, especially when watching movies, playing games. Thanks a TON

  • my laptop HP Pavilion dv5-1125 has no volume osd at all? is there any way i can get one to work on mine(vista OS) ..intelliplay didnt work, thank you for your answer.

  • Yes, it worked. OSD disappears and quickplay bar works correctly. Besides, you can rename hpkbdapp instead of deleting it.

  • hey did you try this? I need to get rid of the same problem. Did it work for you?

  • yes, the volume from the quickplay bar is fully functional after you delete the application...

  • But does the volume from the quickplay bar still work after you delete that app? Thanks for your answer.
