The Joe Baccala Story is a faux documentary of an individual and his friends who have taken on the Mafioso Stereotype as their own. Using satire and comedy, the Joe Baccala Story addresses Hollywood and mass media's stereotypical portrayal of Italian Americans, pop culture and society's acceptance of the guido and mafia images, and those who take on that identity as real and incorporate it into their daily lives. Everyone around Baccala thinks he's a made guy including himself. Baccala and his friends enjoy the celebrity status they receive being perceived as "made guys' by their friends, the local media, and community.
The higher-ups know Baccala is not a "made guy" but turn a blind eye to his openness because he is a good earner. His lack of knowledge of how the Mafia really works, acting like a TV-type wiseguy, and his openness of criminal activity gets him into trouble. The message is really Hollywood's' dissemination of Italian American stereotyping, and its influence on identity construction, symbolic ethnicity, and ethnic choices. The film also demonstrates how decades of mafia glorification has shaped 'goombah' and 'guido' behavior as authentic ethnicity but in reality it is more symbolic in nature. The film is narrated by Joe Baccala and childhood friend Billy C from undisclosed locations.
