Just 2 months ago at a signing show, I walked up to Ed Asner's table and said, "You were in the most suspenseful and scary scene in movie history." He opened his mouth and threw up his hands. I set a photo of him and cast standing by the deserted desert gas station. I continued, "The gas station scene in 'The Satan Bug'. He signed the photo and we had a nice talk about it.
This is nothing like ,book, which I think is superior, but having said tha,t as a movie it stands up really well. It is of its time, as it were but none the worse for it. I have just watched it for the first time in 15 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. All in all a great movie.
It is hard to come by on Amazon etc, so many thanks.:~)
@TheMoviePlanet MacLean's reason for using a pseudonym for a couple of novels was to demonstrate that it wasn't just his name on the cover that caused them to sell. This was a pretty good book - I'd probably have enjoyed it more if I had read it before "Goodbye California" which re-uses a certain plot point. "The Dark Crusader", now, that was a really great read. One of his very finest.
Thanks very much for posting. Pity about the aspect ratio though. I loved this movie as a kid on TV. I only found out later that it's based on an Alistair MacLean story, whom I liked very much in general. This is available on DVD now.

@robert101455 a pen name for Alistair MacLean. He also wrote The Dark Crusader under that name for some reason.

It says right in the credits, "Based on the novel by IAN STUART." Was this a pen name, or it is an error to credit this to Alistair McLean?

This is one of my favorite movies, even though there's a lot to it I didn't understand.
ie Why wasn't such a big made about Reagan's muder early on?
OK, no biggie, but what other movies besides this and Andromeda Strain are there, that are alike, same era? (with all the old mopars and such).
