Axial and the Plane explores the austere aftermath of Our Future Disaster through contemporary dance and 16mm film. Through choreography, camera, and editing, the world as we know it, as exemplified by the concept of a comprehensive body, has been violently reconfigured. While the dancers project a state of physical disassociation through dull eyes and expressionless faces, their limbs fight for equilibrium with the same body consciousness of a worm cut in half or a beheaded chicken. As filmmaker and choreographer, Ivan Rubio and Gabrielle Martin draw from and allude to the convalescence of apocalyptic themes within public imagination, including the threat of nuclear warfare and terrorism, and the natural, supernatural, and technological disasters of science fiction cinema. Both tranquil and frenetic, the Future aftermath of Axial and the Plane offers an ambivalent response to the eternal question of Our fated existence.
