Inspired by director Ron Fricke's films, Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka, and Chronos, Placerqatsi is a look at life in Placer County, California. Qatsi is the Hopi word "life" giving Placerqatsi's the simple meaning "Life in Placer County". Ordinary human activities seem boring and mundane until seen in a different time scale revealing a pattern and rhythm of movement not otherwise apparent. Placer county activities captured over a one year time span are shown as if they occurred during a prototypical single day. People are shown working, playing, eating and shopping in the midst of the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Thanks to Brokenkites (brokenkites.com) for use of the wonderful song "Into the Light".

Scene locations: Penryn sunrise, Western States 100 start in Squaw Valley, Boy Scout camporee in Rocklin, Tevis Cup Endurance ride on Squaw Peak, construction sites in Lincoln and Roseville, Gladding McBean pipe factory, trimming Penryn's famous palm trees, Cosmos sculpture in Roseville, Westfield Mall in Roseville, Loomis Eggplant Festival, Western States 100 checkpoint in Robinson Flat, boating on Folsom Lake in Granite Bay, Newcastle car show, musicians at Auburn's Fair Grounds, Westfield Mall Promenade, Gladding McBean kilns, Twelve Bridges golf course, Sunsplash miniature golf in Roseville, Del Oro HS marching band, outdoor bar at Auburn's Black and White Ball, the Black and White Ball "loo queue", Roseville Automall sign and the moon over Penryn.

  • Man... the Qatsi Trilogy. Hey your stuff is really good. I love the balloon race too. Gives me a rush of emotions all at once. More more... BTW what camera do you use and how do you do such a smooth panning?

  • Lately I've been using the Canon 400XTi and the S3 IS. The panning is done with an pan/tilt head from Directed Perception using some software I wrote.

    Thanks for the positive remarks,

    Mike
