Fall preview for The Paul Lynde Show from 1972. After Bewitched was cancelled, most of the writers and crew moved over to producer William Ashers next project for ABC, The Paul Lynde Show.
Like Bewitched, the Lynde show had an unbelievable fantasy concept: Paul playing a straight guy living in the suburbs with a wife and two kids dealing with the everyday frustrations of life.
This preposterous premise proved to be too much of a stretch even for people who watched TV on a regular basis. Besides, the premise was a rip-off of All in the Family, with Paul (and his wife) cohabitating with their daughter and her lazy, long-haired hippy husband that he can't stand.
Paul Lynde back in the day was the funniest man alive no matter where he appeared or what he did--but we were soooo disappointed when this show finally debuted. My family and I wanted to love it (because we loved him) but it was the wrong premise entirely for him. You had the feeling ABC hadn't the courage to give him a series that would really have suited his unique talents and screamingly obvious gay vibe. I think it frustrated him terribly to be relegated to that quippy Hollywood square role.

Loved the clip and this show when it was on when I was 8-9 years old and too bad it did not last. Even tho he was gay did not matter because he was so talented and gifted as far as what he was able to do what he loved doing. He was a jerk sometimes and drank a lot but still continued to work up until his death in 1982. Too bad he is dead and still love him today and am sure many people still do. Thanks for the post from this true fan.

They should retool this show with Andy Dick.

@paramedicEmergency51 Jesus, I was joking. Some people have had the irony/sarcasm/sense of humor surgically removed.

@DocWyoming Actually seeing Ellen DeGeneres play a straight woman (first several seasons of "Ellen") was quite weird.

How very cool! I recall seeing one or two episodes of the late great Mr Lynde's short lived ABC sitcom. What an amazing talent he was....much better than the material he was forced to work with on that rather silly show. THANK YOU so very much for sharing this delightful clip for us! :)
