The biggest thing about this play is just before it, Elway led Stanford on a supposed game-winning drive with as could be seen, practically no time left for a comeback. That's when this happened, and why it was really such a big deal.
I'm sure Cal and Stanford fans know that, but just some insight for others who don't get it.
@chachmeister20 Plus, Elway and Stanford could have let the clock tick all the way down to one second before calling a timeout to kick the go-ahead field goal, but instead left enough time on the clock that Stanford had to kickoff to Cal and the rest is history...
