The Daily Star ( 4 November 2011 ) : Shamim Osman, the Awami League-backed mayoral candidate defeated at the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls last week, yesterday warned that anyone intimidating his loyalists would face dire consequences. "Please inform me if any of my leaders or activists is intimidated. I will visit them in their homes in the dark to respond to the threats and ask why they did it. I am good at this. All I need to do is get into jeans and leave my panjabi behind," said Shamim. He was addressing a gathering at Hira Mahal, his North Chashara residence in Narayanganj. The rally was followed by a procession allegedly attended largely by people brought from outside the city in a bid to demonstrate his clout in the area. The Daily Star has obtained a 12-minute video footage of Shamim's speech at the meeting. "It has already been three days since the polls and the euphoria of victory in the winner's camp should calm down by now," he said as he pointedly looked at his watch. "Nobody will be able to stay in Narayanganj if the intimidation does not stop," said Shamim. He went on saying, "We here are the real Awami League supporters. It is Sheikh Hasina who is now in power, not Khaleda Zia. If necessary, we can turn anything upside down." Referring to the conversation he and Selina Hayat Ivy had with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently, Shamim referred more than once to what he said Sheikh Hasina had told him. "I have never been as grateful to anyone in my life as I am to you. I know if you wished you could have taken over all the polling centres in ten minutes or totally stopped the election," said Osman, quoting the prime minister. "You were not supposed to participate in the elections after the BNP had boycotted them, as it is obvious that BNP supporters won't cast votes for the AL. Despite that, you participated in the election for the sake of having the election go through. You have created a good impression about yourself and me as well. Now I can proudly tell the world how a fair election can be held. God has blessed us with a free and fair election," Osman claimed Hasina as saying. Osman, however, admitted that he had spread propaganda against Ivy during the elections to the effect that she joined hands with Jamaat and BNP. He noted that the BNP, Jamaat, left-leaning parties, the media, the Election Commission and civil society together had worked against him during the elections. "Prothom Alo and The Daily Star group thought that Ivy wouldn't meet our leader [Hasina]. But Shamim Osman is not a fool. I welcomed Ivy and she met our leader. The newspapers will now start to write against my sister [Ivy]." His criticism of veteran journalist ABM Musa was patently offensive. Shamim, at one stage, came down heavily on the central leaders of the Awami League. He said, "I don't obey central leaders who lack character and are alcoholic and who while away the day. I am loyal only to Sheikh Hasina and her blood relatives." He also claimed to have suggested to the PM that she leave the AL leadership to Joy [PM's son] or Rehana [PM's sister] or anyone of her family when she retired. But Hasina had replied that such politics should not continue any more. Criticising the Chief Election Commissioner, Shamim said that before the NCC polls an election commissioner, while looking at a file, had told him that a person with so many cases filed against him could not be good. "I could have replied to that too but my hands were tied," he said. After the speech Shamim brought out a procession on the city streets, which caused severe traffic congestion in the area.
