Ethiopia maintained traditional schools under the patronage of the church for at least 1,600 years. there has been a [sacred] music/dance school at Zur Amba monastery since the days of St. Yared. Students attended famous schools and lived off of the villagers. They studied to serve the church. They were called ye-Qolo Temari. Qolo is assorted roasted grain, often a snack. Kids cannot tell the difference between a beggar and a Qolo Temari. I was punished for the mistake. I called out wrong.
Way back in time, probably even today, students who study to become a priest live from the offering of the villagers like kola, loaf of bread, etc... as the term refers kolo temari = kolo student.
