A Navy missile interceptor destroyed a dying spy satellite 130 miles over the Pacific Ocean on Feb. 21. In this clip, Marine Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, shows and describes the hit.
That was the worst thing you can do in space. Now you have increased orbital debris to thousands of small particles causing a higher level of threat to existing spacecraft in that particular orbit, not to mention endangering the ISS, STS and COSMO. This also fueled the interest of china to do the same and "pollute" the "sweet spot of retrograde orbits. This was obsolutely stupid.
Display of power.
