(www.makariafarm.com is the host farm of the Island Grains project.)
If you can grow grass, you can grow grain. In fact, it's quite possible to grow 60lbs of wheat organically on only 1/40 acre (approx. 1,100 sq.ft.) of land! Here's how to harvest, thresh and winnow grains on a small scale.
Island Grains is a project of Makaria Farm in Duncan BC on Vancouver Island. We offer workshops on small-scale grain growing and an online resource for other backyard grain growers: http://www.islandgrains.com.
I hope you don't mind I sent a video response to this video of a homemade bicycle wheat thresher I built and anyone may use the design under creative commons, feel free to adapt or modify to your liking. I also have a video on my channel of a table top version that you clamp to a table and crank by hand.

a certain amount of abrasion will thresh your heads more easily. Try standing on the pillow case and shuffling your feet. Get the pillow case stuffed full with grain heads to lessen cracking.
