  • @FireFistShikamaru (continued) If he actually did things like "I can do X because I'm Batman" I think I could get behind it, also, when I say mean spirited, he is trying to ruin the characters, a good way to parodying the other characters would be to have Bruce making fun of them in some way, but have the characters keep their real personalities, like: "I know who you are Clark, and you have NO damn idea who I am" and have superman thinking to himself "I wonder if Bruce is crazy or something."

  • @FireFistShikamaru Okay, in that case, I'll give you that it is a parody, but what you have to give me is that it is a bad parody. It is not well written, has way too much padding, is underdeveloped, and is inconsistent.

  • @lich109 (continued) Also, how many times have you heard people say "Batman can do *insert unlikely ability or technique here* because he's Batman!" How many times have you heard that from idiotic fanboys? Frank Miller based his "I can do this because I'm the goddamn Batman!" line on those stupid claims. The book isn't just a parody of Batman's character or of his comics. It also parodies what stupid people in real life say about Batman and how they ridiculously overpower Batman sometimes.

  • @lich109 "He's the best and if you don't think so, you're stupid" is EXACTLY what Batman fanboy extremists always say about him. I'm sure you heard it tons of times on the internet that Batman is the greatest and that no one can beat him in a fight (not Superman, Galactus, God, etc.) and that you're a fucking moron if you don't think so. Hell, even the normal Batman fans still say that but as a joke. Miller is basically making fun of all the fanboys that say that by writing Batman like that.

  • @FireFistShikamaru Not to mention when he starts introducing other characters that he tries to destroy with this book, it comes off as if frank is a mean spirited little kid at a playground, playing with his batman toy and arguing "He's best, and if you don't think so, you're stupid!" It almost seems as if frank is writing a "what not to do" guide as a comic that gets everything wrong, and if that was what it was meant to be, then I'd praise the guy.

  • @FireFistShikamaru It seems odd then that he wouldn't right it as satire, or at least some comprehensible satire and if all else fails, at least make the satire interesting or funny.

In this, all we see is a guy repeat the same dialogue (something I could kinda understand if I reached a lot) talk about how awesome he is (I can get that) and do the exact opposite of what he is supposed to do (protect people) and use methods that go against even his costume (laughing to give away position).

  • @Ikarosus His work on Daredevil is a good example of this. He was put on the book, didn't listen to anything Marvel said and completely reinvented the character. His run on Daredevil today is considered to be the pinnacle of Daredevil in comics and he also successfully reinvented the character into what he is today. I'm not saying that he always comes out with a masterpiece when not doing what he's asked to do by Marvel and DC. I'm just saying that it HAS happened in the past.

  • @Ikarosus 3) Miller has a track record of being asked to do something and doing something completely different than what Marvel and DC intended for him to do. He's done this a lot and those comics usually turned out far more successful in reactions and popularity than Marvel and DC hoped for.

  • @Ikarosus

    1) That's because it wasn't supposed to be a satire. DC wanted it to be a modern update on Batman similar to the Ultimate Marvel titles. But Frank Miller said "Fuck that. I'm making a Batman satire."

    2) I agree with that.

  • @lich109 Overall, NOTHING in this book is meant to be taken seriously. This book is basically Frank Miller just making fun of the Batman character (not because he dislikes Batman but because he dislikes how a lot of writers portray Batman in the canon DC universe as if he was a completely insane monster with complete lack of self-control or humanity).

  • @lich109 That's the idea. Frank Miller is making fun of how insane Batman really is. He's so obsessed with hunting criminals down that he just goes on a rampage without planning ahead. The purpose is to make you laugh at how angry and insane this guy is. Once again, it's not supposed to be taken seriously.

  • @lich109 Stuff like him putting Robin through labor work and referring to him as "My little Robin" isnt an indication that it's parodying the whole idea of Batman putting a kid at risk by letting that kid fight along his side? Thats just 1 example. And whether you think it's a good parody or not, at least criticize it on whether it's a good parody or not. Don't criticize it from a serious perspective. Thats like criticizing a bad comedy not for being a bad comedy but for not being a good drama.

  • @FireFistShikamaru Sorry, but I more and more doubt that.

    1. It wasnt ever marketed as satire, before it got negative reactions.

    2. It makes no sence taking place in the same universe, as Year One and DKR.

And as far as I know, Miller was asked to do a serious story. If he decided to make it satire, he should tell someone.

  • @FireFistShikamaru Incidentally, the reason his inner monologue ruins it for me is because the guy we listen to clearly has no idea how to plan and coordinate his attacks against criminals, I can't buy that this batman stands a chance against any of his rogue's gallery when all he does is run in and hit things, without the monologue it could be possible to fool us into thinking that batman has plans to defeat his enemies, and not just luck.

  • @FireFistShikamaru I'd honestly be willing to buy that bit with green lantern then, as well as a lot of other things, if batman had less or no inner monologue. That is really the thing that ruins it, it goes beyond the realm of parodies, and into the realm of stupid, a proper parody of his darker side would be criminals being let loose after six months in the hospital, only to be immediately beat up again, not killed, as good parodies accent the weird things that are already there.

  • @lich109 The fight they had with Green Lantern is also supposed to not be taken seriously. That was Frank Miller poking fun at the whole "Batman is invincible and can defeat every living being in the world with prep time". I'm sure you've heard Batman fans in the past say that Batman can beat anyone because he is "the goddamn Batman". Frank Miller took that idea and parodied (spelling?) it in that fight with Green Lantern.

  • @lich109 It does. Frank Miller is making fun of the way some writers write Batman these days. Some writers write him like a complete psychopath who isn't mentally stable in any way (and yes, I know that Batman is supposed to be a bit insane but some writers ridiculously overdue it). Frank Miller is poking fun at the way those writers write Batman. He's stated many times he believes some writers write him too insane.

  • @FireFistShikamaru for him to be making fun of a side of something, it would have to exist in the first place, also, there's a big difference between satire, and bullshit, like the fight against robin and green lantern that green lantern loses, even though it should take all of two seconds for lantern to crush both of them.

  • Do people realize that All Star Batman & Robin is a book that's not meant to be taken seriously? Frank Miller has stated many times that it is supposed to be a parody and a satire of the Batman comics. The book is poking fun at the psychopathic side of Batman.

  • @Archedgar It might be funny, but Batman would NEVER say that. what's wrong with just "I'm Batman".

  • @LACUEVADELOBO8721

God forbid people having different opinions and voicing them

I might not agree on everything he has to say, but I do see his points and it's quite interesting to listen to

Still wanna read the comic myself and see what I think about it, nothing being "ruined"

If anything this review made me more interested in the comic

Everybody is not gonna like or dislike your favorite writer/idol whatever, welcome to reality

  • Linkara, I had always loved you, but now that I found out that you have no problem with Batman's voice in The Dark Knight made me love you even more. I had searched high and low but everyone hates it (Simon Pegg, Kevin Smith, Doug Walker, James Rolfe, Kevin Conroy, TJ Kincaid, Matt Stone, The Spill Crew, my own mom, etc.) Can't wait for TDKR!!!!!!!!

  • im still tryna work out how Batman grew a 5oclock shadow when Bruce Wayne:Agent of NAMBLA was babyfaced cleanshaven with Vicky Vale -__-

  • 3 people are dense and retarded.

  • did he make fun of sin city?
